Frequently Asked Questions About Domain Names

What is a domain name?
A domain name is an easily remembered address for your business or personal website which a web browser can 'read' to find and display your website.

Why do I need a domain name?
Your own domain name helps ensure that your business is easily found and remembered on the Internet. Although it is possible to park your site in free space, you can end up with a web address like this: 'www.freebiespace.com/users/~tjones/mybusiness.htm'. This isn't a very professional online image to have, nor is it easy to remember. Your own domain is unique to you and is the best way to have a memorable web presence that your customers will come back to.

What domain names do LWD Internet provide?
You can register the most popular gTLDs (.com / .net / .org / .info / .biz) and .uk domains (.co.uk / .org.uk) directly from our website. As members of Nominet, we can also register other .uk domain names for you, including .ltd.uk and .plc.uk. You will need to if you wish to register these with us. Additional fees will apply.

What can't I have as a domain name?
Domain names can contain any combination of letters and numbers, and you may also use hyphens. You may use more than one hyphen (-), but do not put them together (--). You cannot have a hyphen as the first character in a domain name. Spaces and other characters are not permitted in domain names. They must also be between 3 and 63 characters long including the extension (.co.uk or .com). You cannot register a domain name which infringes someone else's trade mark rights.

What if my desired domain name is taken?
If you think someone has taken a name which infringes your copyright / trademark then read our dispute policy. If the name is not trademarked then you simply have to find an alternative. Hyphens are good for splitting words in domain names, so if 'thetoystore' is taken, try 'the-toy-store'. Alternatively, you could use a different top level domain - instead of .com, buy a .co.uk or, if eligible, a .ltd.uk or .plc.uk. Another idea is to find a suitable alternative to a business name - so the domain name for The Toy Store could be 'kidstoys.co.uk'.

How long before my domain name is available for use?
Your domain name should be active about 24 hours after registering, although it can sometimes take slightly longer. These delays are imposed by the registration authorities, not by us. Once your domain name is live it will point to our domain registration holding page that says that the domain name has been registered by one of our customers.

Who is the domain name registered to?
The domain name is registered to you, the registrant. LWD Internet are merely agents registering your domain name on your behalf.

Can I have more than one domain name for my website ?
Yes, you can have as many domain names for your website as you want. For example, you may wish to register both the .com and the .co.uk versions of your domain name and have them both pointing at your site. Just email us to let us know you want the other domain names set up on that website and it will be done. You should note that you may have just the one website per web hosting account.

How are my personal details used?
Your personal details (name, address etc.) will be passed to the relevant domain registration authority (required to register a domain name). Should anybody perform a domain name search (whois) on your domain name, these details may be displayed. LWD Internet retain your contact details to enable us to maintain your domain name and to remind you to renew your domain name in the future. LWD Internet respect your right to privacy and will not pass your details on to any other party unless required to do so by law. You should read our privacy policy.
