This document explains how to set up dial up networking on your Windows PC at home. Please note that we no longer provide our own dial up access for new web hosting accounts although we will continue to support those account holders still using our dial up service. You are free to use any dial up, DSL or cable modem service with your web hosting account, including the many free services.
Setting up dial-up networking In order to set up and use your dial-up account, you will need the dial-up ID and password set when you purchased your web hosting account. You will find these in the Hosting Activation Notice we sent you by email when we activated your hosting account.
- Click on your Windows Start button and follow the path to Programs - Accessories. Select Dial-Up Networking. Double click the 'Make New Connection' icon displayed in the window (As shown below).
- Type 'LWD Internet' into the 'My Connection' field.
- Select your modem from the drop down menu. If you are unsure about which modem you have, leave this field as it was by default. Click 'Next'
- Fill in the 'Area Code' field and the 'Telephone Number' field with the telephone number given.
- Select your country code from the drop down menu. Click 'Next'.
- Click 'Finish'. Your Dial-Up connection has been created.
Creating a shortcut Next you may wish to place a shortcut to your new dial-up connection onto your desktop.
- Right click your connection with your mouse.
- Select 'Create Shortcut'.
- If your machine promts you to confirm desktop placement, agree.
- If your machine places the shortcut in your open Dial-up network window you can drag it and drop it on your desktop with your mouse.
- Your connection is now ready for use with the username and password we supplied.
Difficulties All ISPs suffer some difficulties with their dial-ups at some times and we are no exception. There can be many reasons for these problems, including network congestion, line faults, equipment failure and so on. These problems are inevitably beyond our control - they are the responsibility of the telecoms providers - and ISPs can rarely do anything about them.
Your dial-up was provided free of charge, and because connection problems are entirely out of our control, we cannot provide any specific support for the dial-up service. If you experience difficulty using the dial-up we provide, we recommend that you switch to another dial-up until the problems with our dial-up have cleared. You can find out if the problems with our dial-up have cleared simply by using the dial-up.
