Monitoring Site Usage

The Site Usage button on your control panel allows you to view a wide range of usage information for your site, including log files, data transfer, disk usage, page requests and browser usage. Separate log files and statistics are available for web, FTP and email.

For most usage or statistical information, Webalizer will provide more user friendly information. You should use the site usage information here for information that is not provided by Webalizer.

Please note that the statistical information shown in the Site Usage area of your control panel is updated once daily at around 4.30am GMT. No usage reports will be generated until after 4.30am the following morning.

Data Transfer (bandwidth)
The site usage area shows Bytes Transferred for the period shown. There are separate figures for web, email and FTP. These should be added together to calculate your total data transfer over the period shown. If you make a note of data transfer at the beginning of the month then subtract this from the figures shown at the beginning of the following month, this will give you your data transfer (bandwidth) use for that month.

Disk Usage
This shows the total usage of the diskspace you have been allocated. It also shows the usage by each of the users on your account. If you are approaching your diskspace limits, you should either delete some files or upgrade your account.

Log Files
Your log files show all usage on your site and can give you information that you cannot get from Webalizer statistics. For example, Webalizer can show you which search engines visitors have come from and which search terms were used, but not which search terms were used on which search engines. Your web log files show all this information and more. Your FTP and email log files can show you all file transfers and all email traffic on your domain.

Although you can view your log files in the Site Usage area of your control panel, the display isn't very clear. You may find it easier to download your log files by FTP.

Other Statistical Information
Only partial information is available for each of the other statistics in the Site Usage area. For more detailed statistics, either use Webalizer or download your log files by FTP.
