Windows web hosting basics

This pages in this section are specific to hosting accounts on the Windows 2000 web servers. If you have a web hosting account on the Linux servers then you need to refer to the Linux hosting pages

Windows 2000 / IIS5
The servers are running Windows 2000 and Internet Information Service ( IIS ) 5 web server. Windows 2000 is the replacement for Windows NT which ran IIS4 and ASP 2.

IIS5 comes with ASP 3 allowing you to run scripts written in Active Server Pages. ASP 3 has more features than ASP 2 running on Windows NT / IIS4.

Other Software
Also installed on the server are some third party ASP components such as ASPUpload and JMail, and ActiveState Perl. You should read the Perl for Windows and ASP pages in this section for more information.

In general, you can run your scripts and place your databases in any directory inside htdocs on your account. We recommend that you place your databases and other sensitive files in the private directory. As your domain name is mapped to the htdocs directory, there is no direct web access to the private directory and your files can therefore only be access by scripts on your site. Ensure that your scripts use the correct path to the files, ie "../private/database.mdb"

FrontPage
FrontPage 2000 Extensions are only installed as an optional extra. See the FrontPage page for more information.

Graphical Statistics
We no longer provide graphical statistics for new web hosting accounts on the Windows servers. Instead, we recommend that you use one of the many online and offline graphical statistics packages such as WebTrends or Analog Statistics. You have access to your raw log files so you can download these to use with the graphical statistics package of your choice.
